This type of thermal label only requires the label to print. If you only load the blank labels into your printer to print, direct thermal is what you need to choose.
This type of thermal label requires a wax ribbon to print onto a label. If you use a ribbon currently to print, you need thermal transfer labels.
Do you currently have a black line on the liner between each label? If you do, your mobile printer will require labels with a timing mark. A timing mark is a black line on the release liner in between each label. Also called a sensor mark, printers use timing marks to distinguish one label from the next.
If you don't currently have a black line on the liner between each label, your mobile printer will require blank labels and your printer will rely on gap sensors. Gap sensors are a section of blank space between each label. This allows the printer to distinguish where one label ends and the next begins.
Our most popular and least expensive option. Works for almost every barcoding application. Service temperature range of 32 - 125 degrees.
Perfect for applications where you may need to remove the labels after application. Good for short term removable applications.
Ideal for companies that are applying or storing their labels in refrigerated or frozen applications. These labels will stick in temperatures as low as negative 40 degrees.
A popular choice for almost all labeling projects. Won’t produce a glare or leave smudges from fingerprints. A great low cost option if you are looking for a standard label with excellent print quality.
The perfect choice for a more durable label. Synthetic material that is tear-resistant, water-resistant, and capable of withstanding harsh environments, oils, and chemicals. Ideal for long-term applications.
A unique, versatile way to bring attention to labels. Useful for helping to recognize hazardous materials, drawing cautionary attention, or identification, tracking, and inventory purposes.
A black backing designed to mute out any visible images, text, or colors. Perfect for covering up any obsolete information or previously used labels or barcodes.
A finish that adds an extra layer of protection to help prevent scuffing or markings that can occur during transit. An ideal pick for a more durable paper material.
Not sure which label material is right for you? For short term labeling projects that provide excellent print quality and easy customization to any application, paper is what you need. When you need a more durable label resistant to tearing, smudging, and exposure to the elements like heat and moisture, poly is the perfect fit.
Not sure which label finish you need? If your label project benefits from a smooth, soft, and muted look to enhance your unique designs and give an overall authentic feel, then matte is an ideal choice. If your labels need to "pop" with a reflective shine and polished overlay that accentuates colors to look more vibrant, gloss is the way to go.
Matte black ink offers darker, sharper black text and images when printed on specific media: matte, textured, and plain. Matte is not recommended for either semi and high-gloss finishes. This version meets BS5609 certification.
Gloss FinishGloss black ink is optimized for printing on a wider variety of substrates when compared to black matte ink. This includes finishes such as glossy, matte, plain, texture, and more. This version meets BS5609 certification.
When deciding between matte vs gloss, consider the type of media you'll be printing on.
Ideally suited for the manual application of on-demand printing. Peel-and-present capability prints individual labels with the liner already removed, allowing for immediate application. An integrated label-taking sensor holds off printing additional labels until the previous label is removed.
Auto CutterAn excellent choice for creating variable-length labels. Auto-cutter capability covers the full spectrum of label sizes with a 4" or 8" built-in cutter. Because labels can be cut at any size, this version helps reduce costs and overall inventory when compared to buying and using pre-printed labels.
Both the peel & present and auto cutter options will allow for the use of a label rewinder.
Choosing which ribbon to use depends on what material your label is made from.
Check out the chart below to find what ribbon is right for you.
| Material | Ribbon Type |
|---|---|
| Paper | Wax |
| Polypropylene | Wax Resin |
| Vinyl, Polyester | Resin |

The right printer starts with the right information. Use the links below to explore the Epson ColorWorks C4000 and see how it fits your business.
See how the Epson C4000 fits your label line, with a closer look at print quality, supported command languages, connectivity, and remote management.
The Epson ColorWorks C4000 brings on-demand color label printing to small workspaces. Its compact design makes it a practical choice for product labels and ID badges in retail, healthcare, and food and beverage settings.
Behind that print quality is Epson PrecisionCore technology, which produces sharp text, clear barcodes, and detailed images. The permanent printhead is designed to last the life of the printer, reducing the need for routine printhead replacements.
Available in gloss black and matte black ink versions, the C4000 offers options for different label materials. Gloss black ink works with a wider range of media, while matte black produces deeper blacks on matte and plain paper labels.
Through PrecisionCore technology, Epson ColorWorks printers are able to deliver top of the line print quality for text, images, barcodes, and more.
Designed for speed and precise ink placement, the C4000’s printhead works with a resolution of up to 1200 × 1200 dpi to produce vibrant colors, smooth gradations, and sharp image details on your labels.
ZPL II support helps Epson ColorWorks printers work with existing label-printing software, reducing the need for reprogramming.
ESC/Label gives users complete control to customize their inkjet printer. Its command extensions support color product images, logos, and color-coded fields to highlight key information and reinforce brand identity.
Users can also configure different label types and sizes while arranging text, barcodes, logos, or graphics in any desired position on the label.
Epson ColorWorks C4000 remote management tools help IT and support teams monitor and manage networked printers across multiple locations. Teams can configure printer settings and deploy changes to groups of printers without visiting each device.
These tools support email alerts for issues that need attention, remote firmware updates, and network configuration. Browser-based access lets teams view and adjust supported settings from a computer or an Apple or Android smartphone, making routine printer management more convenient.

The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 suits businesses that need durable 4" color labels on demand in a compact desktop footprint (12.2" x 11.1" x 11.2", 28.7 lb). It prints up to 1200 x 1200 dpi with UltraChrome DL pigment ink. Typical uses are retail, food, healthcare, GHS and BS 5609 jobs above roughly 50 labels a day.
Choose the Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 Gloss if you print on gloss paper, gloss film, or a mix of finishes. Choose the CW-C4000 Matte if you print on plain, matte, textured, or matte synthetic stock and want darker blacks. Epson doesn’t recommend matte black ink on gloss media. Both versions use the same cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges.
Choose the Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 if you print lower volumes and need durable pigment-ink labels from a compact printer. Choose the Epson ColorWorks CW-C6000 if you print higher volumes, want fewer roll changes, or need a peeler.
The C4000 holds rolls up to 4" in outside diameter on a 1.75" to 2.25" core and comes with an auto-cutter. The C6000 holds rolls up to 8" on a 3" core, so you’ll change rolls less often. It also prints faster, at up to 5" per second (at a 3.5" print width). The C6000 comes in two versions: one with an auto-cutter and one with a peeler that separates each label from its backing as it prints. It can also connect to automatic label applicators. Both printers print up to 4.25" wide at 1200 x 1200 dpi.
Yes. The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 supports Zebra ZPL II natively, so your existing ZPL label formats can print without reprogramming. You can add color later using ESC/Label color extensions. It also supports SAP Indirect Printing and High Volume Printing (HVP). Test complex ZPL formats on the C4000 before rolling it out across your fleet.
The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 prints up to 4.25" wide and works with both roll and fanfold media. Rolls can be 1.0" to 4.41" wide (including liner), and fanfold can be 2.0" to 4.41" wide. Labels can be 0.31" to 16" long. Internal rolls can be up to 4" in outside diameter on a 1.75" to 2.25" core, and larger rolls need an external unwinder. Media thickness can range from 0.0033" to 0.009".
Yes, with the right media. The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 with UltraChrome DL pigment ink is BS 5609 certified when paired with a certified synthetic label stock, and the certification covers both the Gloss and Matte versions. Because BS 5609 certification applies to the printer and label material together, any GHS labels that need to meet BS 5609 must be printed on a certified synthetic label stock.
No. The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 works with labels from any manufacturer as long as they’re inkjet-receptive and fit the printer’s width, core, and outside diameter limits. Smith Corona makes compatible 2" core, 4" OD inkjet roll labels in gloss paper, matte paper, and polypropylene. The only supply that must be Epson-brand is the ink.
Yes. The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 prints on wristband media with a black mark, as well as die-cut labels (with or without black marks), continuous labels, and tag stock. It also accepts fanfold media 2.0" to 4.41" wide, fed from the back of the printer. Fanfold works well for long runs, since a stack holds more labels than the printer’s largest internal roll (4" OD).
The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 has drivers for Windows 11, 10, and 8.1, Windows Server 2012–2022, and macOS (Mac OS X 10.9.5 or later). Operation has also been confirmed on CentOS 7 and Ubuntu 20.04 (x86_64).
The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 comes with USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet. For Wi-Fi, you’ll need the optional Wi-Fi dongle (OT-WL06). You can monitor and update printers remotely with Epson Device Admin, WebConfig, Epson Deployment Tool, and Epson Firmware Updater. Unlike the CW-D3800, the C4000 also supports Epson cloud printing.
The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 works with Label Boost Designer (a free download) and the Epson ColorWorks Print app. The Windows driver also works with BarTender, NiceLabel/Loftware, and TEKLYNX CODESOFT. Because the C4000 supports ZPL II, label templates exported from Zebra-based systems can print directly.
Epson offers three accessories for the Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000: a replacement auto-cutter unit (OT-CU40), a paper exit tray (OT-PT40), and a Wi-Fi dongle (OT-WL06). For rolls larger than the printer’s 4" OD internal limit, you can also use an external unwinder.
The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 uses four 50 mL SJIC41P UltraChrome DL pigment ink cartridges. The cyan (SJIC41P-C), magenta (SJIC41P-M), and yellow (SJIC41P-Y) cartridges are the same for every C4000. The black is Gloss Black (SJIC41P-BK). The CW-D3800’s SJIC56P dye cartridges won’t work in the C4000, and the printer only accepts genuine Epson cartridges.
The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 uses four 50 mL SJIC41P UltraChrome DL pigment ink cartridges. The cyan (SJIC41P-C), magenta (SJIC41P-M), and yellow (SJIC41P-Y) cartridges are the same for every C4000. The black is Matte Black (SJIC41P-MK). The CW-D3800’s SJIC56P dye cartridges won’t work in the C4000, and the printer only accepts genuine Epson cartridges.
The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 uses the SJMB4000 maintenance box, the same one as the CW-D3800. It collects waste ink from printhead cleaning, and you’ll need to replace it when the printer says it’s full. One comes with the printer, but we suggest keeping a spare on hand so you aren’t stuck waiting when it fills up.
No. The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 has a permanent PrecisionCore printhead with automatic Nozzle Verification Technology. Wear items are different: the auto cutter is rated for up to 1.5 million cuts on paper liner and can be replaced with the OT-CU40 unit, and the paper-feed mechanism is rated for 150 km.
It depends on your labels. Epson doesn’t publish a cost per label for the Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000, because ink use depends on how much of each label your design covers, your print resolution, media, and how often you print. Epson says its ink costs are comparable to thermal transfer printers that produce similarly durable labels. For a real cost per label, send us your artwork and monthly volume, and we’ll give you an estimate.
Faded or smeared black on Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 Matte labels usually means you’re printing on gloss media. Matte black ink is made for porous surfaces like plain and matte paper. On gloss paper or gloss film, it sits on top instead of soaking in, so it can look faded or smear easily. To fix it, switch to plain, matte, or matte synthetic stock. If you need glossy labels, the CW-C4000 Gloss is a better fit, since its gloss black ink works on both gloss and matte finishes.
Smudged Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 Gloss labels on plain paper usually mean the media type setting doesn’t match your stock. Plain paper absorbs ink differently than gloss media, so the setting matters. If it’s wrong, ink can take longer to dry, so labels can smudge easily. To fix it, set the media type to plain paper and let labels dry completely before handling them. If you mostly print on plain or matte stock, the CW-C4000 Matte is a better fit, since its matte black ink is made for porous surfaces.
Streaks or white lines on Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 labels usually mean the printhead nozzles are clogged. Print a nozzle check pattern from the printer’s Maintenance menu or the driver utility. If any lines are missing, run a head cleaning and print the pattern again. It’s also worth checking that the media type setting matches the label stock you loaded.
Skipped labels, blank labels, or a media error on the Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 usually mean the media detection setting doesn’t match your label stock. Set the detection mode (gap, black mark, or continuous) and the label dimensions to match your roll, then run media detection so the sensor learns the gap or mark. The gap between die-cut labels must be about 0.08" to 0.24" (2–6 mm). Our labels have a 0.125" gap, which falls within that range.
Ragged or incomplete cuts on the Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 can mean the auto-cutter is worn. How long the cutter lasts depends on what you’re cutting: up to 1.5 million cuts on paper liner, 500,000 on synthetic liner, and 100,000 on continuous synthetic. Epson sells a replacement cutter unit (OT-CU40), but contact support before replacing it.

There’s something about the phrase “small but mighty.”
Maybe that’s what Epson had in mind when designing an inkjet printer? They certainly tried accomplishing it with the new ColorWorks C4000.
It’s definitely the smallest inkjet printer I’ve worked with yet. Seriously, this looks like a bigger version of the easy bake oven I had as a kid. But don’t let the size fool you.

Epson calls this model “powerful and compact,” meant to measure up to the industrial inkjet printers they manufacture.
If you’re looking to get your foot in the door with a color label printer, the C4000 might be the right fit.
So just how powerful of an inkjet printer do you get for this price? Let’s take a look:
Like other Epson ColorWorks inkjet printers, the C4000 is made to print high resolution for bright vivid colors.
If you’re running a small business looking to improve the quality of your labels, the Epson ColorWorks C4000 might be a contender. Industries this printer can be used in include:
Need a new wine label for your newest harvest? Done.
Have to update variable information on your cannabis gummies? Score.
Looking to print ID badges for your pharmacy team? Boom.
Need a hazardous label for your chemical drums? Got it.
And you’re in luck! The ColorWorks C4000 has its BS 5609 certification. Just combine the printer’s pigment-based ink with the right durable label materials and you’re set to ship dangerous goods in marine environments.
Plus, it comes with a built-in auto cutter so labels can be printed at varying lengths. (Sorry, guys, no peeler mode feature is available with the C4000).
The ColorWorks C4000 is a step up from its predecessor, the C3500 (which is sadly discontinued).
While they share the same price tag, the C4000 has upgraded features making it a better version.
These include:
| CW-C4000 | CW-C3500 | |
|---|---|---|
| Higher Resolution | 1200 x 1200 | 720 x 360 |
| Greater Compatibility | Windows, MAC, SAP | Windows Only |
| Larger Ink Cartridges | 50 ml | 32.5 ml |
| Gloss & Matte Available | Yes | No |
On the note of gloss and matte: the ColorWorks C3500 doesn’t support high gloss paper. But the ColorWorks C4000 does, along with the ability to print on glossy film and textured paper for a variety of different applications.
However, both printers are BS 5609 certified, which is a great attribute to have. This feature is typically seen in larger, industrial inkjet printers. But if your business needs to print these durable, high-quality labels and your workspace is small, these compact printers come in handy.
Now, when it comes to using roll labels for the ColorWorks C4000, they’re a little different from standard roll sizes.
Because of its smaller size, the ColorWorks C4000 uses 2” core roll labels with a 4” outer diameter.
Yes, this is a bit of an oddball core size, and unfortunately finding labels with a 4” outer diameter is not the easiest. You’ll need to scour the web like you’re searching for buried treasure.
This specific size also means less labels per roll. Less labels means you’ll be changing out rolls and placing orders more often, ultimately adding to your overall costs. This is a huge downside, especially if your business or workload is growing quickly.
However, you can print with 3” core roll labels. You’ll just need an external roll holder that sits behind the printer, eliminating any issues trying to get labels to fit.

Fanfold labels are also an option, which will also sit behind the printer. Any of these label options can be either paper or polypropylene material.
However, if you’re using roll labels, the printer’s size does make it a bit tricky to load them in.
The roll paper guides need to be pushed outward and held in place with the lock lever. After the roll is inserted, you’ll need to raise the lock lever and adjust the label roll so there’s no gap.
Just make sure you are a little careful during the label loading process.
Like other printers in the Epson ColorWorks series, you’ll need to ask yourself one very important question before you make a purchase: gloss or matte?
That’s right, the C4000 comes with 2 different ink types. And once you make your decision, that’s the version you’re stuck with!
Let’s break down their benefits so you can make the best decision:
Gloss inks give you a little more versatility. They can be printed on both gloss and matte label media, which ultimately offers a wider range of applications. And when used with gloss media, gloss ink provides excellent high-quality images.
So what’s the difference with matte? The only ink color that changes between these 2 options is the black ink.
| Media | Gloss Black Ink | Matte Black Ink |
|---|---|---|
| Matte Paper | Good Image | Richer Image- Darker Black |
| Matte Polypropylene | Good Image | Richer Image- Darker Black |
| Gloss Paper | Excellent Image | Not Recommended |
| Gloss Polypropylene | Excellent Image | Not Recommended |
Matte ink provides a richer, darker black ink on matte media than gloss black ink. This is especially true when combined with paper matte media. But make a note – matte inks are not recommended for gloss label media.
The C4000 uses a pigment-based ink in the standard CMYK colors. Pair with synthetic label materials for any type of durable label application.
So just be sure to consider carefully depending on what your labeling needs are.
Like I mentioned earlier, the C4000 might be smaller but it’s built to compete with larger, industrial-sized inkjet printers.
Here’s a few examples of how this model holds its own against other Epson ColorWorks printers:
It’s like Epson combined some of the best attributes of their other ColorWorks printers and compacted them into the C4000.
First, it has the same print width as the ColorWorks C7500G. While the C6500A reigns supreme when it comes to printing wide labels (up to 8 inches), the C4000 is still able to compete with the most expensive Epson inkjet printer. Both have a maximum print width of 4.25 inches.
Second, nearly as fast as the C6500A. No one can compete with the C7500G when it comes to print speeds (11.8 seconds per inch is scary fast!). But the C4000 prints at 4 inches per second, just 1 second behind the C6500A’s max speed.

Third, it features a color LCD display screen just like the Colorworks C6500A. This screen displays key bits of information, like ink and maintenance box levels, label material being used, and print errors.
Fourth, it’s got the same high resolution as the ColorWorks C6500A. This one is a huge advantage. At 1200 x 1200 dpi, the C4000 goes toe to toe with inkjet printers marketed as printing the highest quality images: clear, crisp, and colorful.
Don’t forget, the ColorWorks C4000 uses a PrecisionCore® printhead to achieve sharp and clear text.
I have to say, it’s pretty nifty getting all of these upscale features with a cheaper inkjet printer.
Wi-Fi isn’t an option with any of the other Epson ColorWorks printers except the C4000.
It works with compatible mobile devices and is simple enough to use. A Wi-Fi dongle inserted into the back of the printer will enable Wi-Fi communications (this accessory has to be purchased separately, though).
However, it’s worth noting that while it is Wi-Fi certified, the level of performance is subject to the range of the router being used.
Nowadays, everything is going green. And Epson’s jumping on board.
The ColorWorks C4000 is designed with features that make it eco-friendly. But what does this entail?
For starters, it’s a recyclable product. Yep, when your printer reaches the end of its life, Epson provides instructions on how to recycle the hardware, printer ink and toner.
This is thanks to a partnership with Smartway Transport, a US Environmental Protection Agency whose aim is to reduce greenhouse gasses, air pollutants, and improve fuel efficiency.
The ColorWorks C4000 is also RoHS certified.
This one was new to me. It stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances and restricts the use of specific hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products (think mercury, lead, cadmium).
The C4000 being RoHS compliant means the printer does not contain any of these hazardous materials that would pollute the environment when disposed of.
If you’re looking to get a little more out of your inkjet printer, why not consider an accessory?
These tools are great for creating a faster and more efficient printing process.
There are several accessories that can be added to your Epson ColorWorks C4000.

Using an unwinder and rewinder with a small inkjet printer like the C4000 can have many benefits.
Most importantly, when it comes to printing with a larger roll of labels. An external unwinder can support up to a 10” OD, perfect for large print jobs.
Additionally, a rewinder is ideal for applications that require a label applicator or when users want to apply labels by hand.
This accessory is definitely an option to consider for a more convenient and efficient labeling process.
Yes, yes, we have to talk about the negatives. Every printer has some.
But really, these shortcomings aren’t the end of the world. In fact, they’re easily manageable for an inkjet printer user.
Here’s how you can still get the most out of the ColorWorks C4000:
I’ve mentioned this before. And sadly, it’s an issue with all Epson ColorWorks printers.
There’s no design software that comes with your inkjet printer. You’ll be able to set up the printer with the printer driver that’s offered on the Epson website.
But when it comes to designing the labels you need, you’ll have to buy or download a separate program.
However, this gives users the freedom to choose the program that benefits their labeling needs the most. Options like Adobe, BarTender, and CODESOFT work well with Epson.
In all, the C4000 is already the cheapest model in the Colorworks series, so you don’t have to feel guilty about splurging on a more expensive design program (if you choose).
Switching from roll labels to fanfold labels should be a fairly easy process.
Most printers will simply have you load in fanfold labels at the back of the printer. But for the ColorWorks C4000, a plastic paper feed guide is required for fanfold to work.
Here’s how it works:
Remove the plastic paper feed from the rear compartment and reattach it inside the printer where the label roll goes. Changed your mind and want to revert back to rolls? Easy! Simply remove the feed guide and reattach it back behind the printer.
Now say you want to switch inkjet label sizes. Inside the C4000 are platen shutters – 10 slots on the inside door of the printer (5 on each side) that must be opened or closed depending on the width of your labels. Sensors underneath detect the labels and must match the size correctly.
For example, if your labels are 4 inches wide (or around 112 mm), you’ll need to open all of the shutters. If your labels are 2.5 inches wide (around 63 mm), you’ll only open four of the shutters.
And if you’re unsure how to navigate this, don’t worry! There’s a label on top of the printer with images detailing the open/close process for each label width.
This is the first time I’ve seen features like this on a printer. But once you walk through the steps a few times, the transition to different label sizes is easy!
Speed always plays a huge factor when it comes to printing labels.
While I previously mentioned the ColorWorks C4000 is almost as fast as the C6500 models, it still unfortunately ranks the slowest of the entire ColorWorks series.
But really, the C4000 only lags behind the C6500 series by 1 inch per second. That’s it.
And just like the C6500 models, it has the highest resolution at 1200 x 1200 dpi.
While obtaining maximum print quality does mean slower print speeds (as is the same with other Epson printers), the results are high-quality, colorful inkjet labels.
It’s hard to complain about that!
| CW-C4000 | |
|---|---|
| Print Resolution | 1200 x 1200 dpi |
| Max. Print Width | Up to 4.25″ (108 mm) |
| Max. Media Width | 4.41″ (112 mm) |
| Ink Type | Pigment-based, 4 individual CMYK Cartridges |
| Print Speed | Up to 4″ per second |
| Media Type | Plain paper, matte paper, synthetic labels, gloss paper, gloss film |
| Rewinder | Not Included |
So by now the question on your mind is likely, “Is it worth it to buy the Epson ColorWorks C4000?”
If you’re a small business looking to invest in color printing for small batches of labels, this is the printer for you.
At under $2,500, the ColorWorks C4000 gives you a taste of what powerful color printing is without feeling like you’ve made a huge investment. Plus, if your company has environmental concerns and is looking to lean more into sustainable options, Epson has that covered.
I will say not having a label design software and switching labels are a bit of an inconvenience. But nothing that warrants a hard “absolutely not” when deciding if you truly want this printer.
