Tag stock labels are used in industrial size printers. These tags are made of a thick card stock paper material with no adhesive backing. They often have a notch, hole punch, or black timing mark to detect where one label ends and another begins.
Tag stock labels can come in both direct thermal and thermal transfer, which requires a ribbon to print. They are used in a variety of label applications. For example, lumber, pallets, stones, and large industrial equipment. Tags are often stapled, taped, or tied to the item that is being labeled.
The reason tags are used instead of adhesive-backed labels comes down to the specific application. Some items are impractical to label with standard labels because the adhesive has a hard time forming a permanent bond to the surface. Other items would not be suitable for traditional labels because the adhesive could damage the product.
