Epson ColorWorks Printer Buying Guide

3 epson printers on a wooden table 3 epson printers on a wooden table

All Epson ColorWorks printers deliver high-quality color labels, but subtle yet important differences set each model apart. Factors like print width, volume capacity, roll size, and speed can influence which printer is the best fit for your needs.

To make your decision easier, we've broken down the key features of each model and ranked their performance in critical areas. This guide will help you quickly compare and find the right printer for your label printing needs.

Print Width

Print width is a great place to start. If you need to print labels wider than 4”, there’s only one option—the C6500. This model prints up to 8” wide, making it the best choice for larger label printing.

  • C6500 - Up to 8" Wide
  • C4000, C6000, C8000 - Up to 4" Wide

Print Volume

Your printing volume also plays a key role in determining the best printer for your needs. Choosing a model that aligns with your monthly label output ensures optimal performance.

Here are the recommended print volumes based on printing 4” x 6” labels in normal mode:

  • Epson C8000 - 35,000 daily max; 55,000 labels per month
  • Epson C6500 - 4,700 daily max; 22,000 labels per month
  • Epson C6000 - 4,700 daily max; 22,000 labels per month
  • Epson C4000 - 4,200 daily max; 16,000 labels per month

While print volume is an important consideration, other factors like label roll size, ink cartridge capacity, and print speed also play a crucial role in selecting the right printer.

Roll Size

Each Epson ColorWorks printer supports different roll sizes. At first glance, the 8” OD (outer diameter) and 6” OD rolls might seem similar in label count, but that's not the case. The difference in roll length significantly impacts how often you need to reload labels.

  • 8" OD - 500 ft per roll
  • 6" OD - 220 ft per roll
  • 4" OD - 85 ft per roll

For example, with 4” x 2” labels:

  • A 4" OD roll holds ~470 labels
  • A 6" OD roll holds ~1,410 labels
  • A 8" OD roll holds ~2,820 labels

Pro Tip: If your print volume increases and you want to use larger rolls, an external media holder allows you to use bigger rolls without modifying your printer setup.

  • Epson C8000 - Up to 8" OD roll
  • Epson C6000 - Up to 8" OD roll
  • Epson C6500 - Up to 6" OD roll
  • Epson C4000 - Up to 4" OD roll

Ink Cartridge Size

In addition to label rolls, ink cartridges will need to be replaced over time. Some models use larger ink cartridges than others, affecting how often you need to restock.

Labels with heavy color coverage or full-background designs will consume more ink, requiring more frequent cartridge replacements.

  • Epson C8000 - 1.9L
  • Epson C6500 - 80mL
  • Epson C6000 - 80mL
  • Epson C4000 - 50mL

Print Speed

For high-volume label printing, speed is a critical factor in maintaining efficiency and reducing downtime.

  • Epson C8000 - 11.8" per second
  • Epson C6000 - 4.7" per second
  • Epson C4000 - 3.9" per second
  • Epson C6500 - 3.3" per second

DPI (Print Resolution)

If DPI (dots per inch) matters to you, almost all Epson ColorWorks printers offer the same high-resolution print quality—except for the C8000, which has a slightly lower DPI.

  • C4000, C6000, C6500 - 1200 x 1200 dpi
  • C8000 - 600 x 1200 dpi

Feed Option

Epson ColorWorks printers offer two different feed options: auto cutter and peel-and-present. Two models provide the flexibility to choose between these options.

  • Auto cutter - Best for cutting labels into different sizes.
  • Peel-and-present - Ideal for immediate application by automatically peeling labels from the liner.

Pro Tip: No matter which feed option you choose, you can always turn it off when not needed.

  • Epson C6000 - Auto cutter & peel-and-present
  • Epson C6500 - Auto cutter & peel-and-present
  • Epson C4000 - Auto cutter only
  • Epson C8000 - Auto cutter only

Epson ColorWorks Printers

Epson ColorWorks printers deliver high-resolution, on-demand color printing for businesses that need durable, professional labels. Designed as a color upgrade to black-and-white thermal printers, these inkjet models offer crisp, vibrant prints with resolutions up to 1200 dpi, ensuring sharp detail and excellent readability.

Using pigment-based inks, Epson ColorWorks printers produce long-lasting, smudge-resistant labels suitable for various applications, including product branding, compliance labeling, and inventory management. They seamlessly integrate into existing workflows, making them a versatile solution for businesses looking to enhance their labeling process.

These printers are available in gloss and matte versions to match your preferred label material, ensuring the best print quality for your application. Select models also feature an auto cutter or peeler, allowing for easier handling and application of labels.

At Smith Corona, we provide competitive pricing and expert support to help you find the right Epson ColorWorks printer for your needs. Whether you’re printing in bulk or creating custom product labels, these printers provide reliable performance and outstanding color quality.

    • Auto-cutter: This feature cuts each label after it’s printed, allowing for easy handling and manual application. It’s especially useful for bulk printing and provides added flexibility by enabling variable label lengths when using continuous labels.
    • Peel-and-present: This feature peels the backing off the label as it prints and holds it in place for immediate use. It's especially useful for applications where you need to apply each label right away, speeding up the process.
  • The choice between the Gloss and Matte versions of an Epson ColorWorks printer depends on the type of labels you plan to print.Once you choose a version, it cannot be changed, so it's important to select the right one for your needs.

    • Gloss Version: Designed for printing on glossy, semi-gloss, and other shiny label materials. It delivers vibrant colors and sharp details with a high-quality finish. It can also print on matte materials, but the black ink may not appear as rich or dark compared to the Matte version.
    • Matte Version: Specifically made for matte and uncoated label materials. It produces deeper, darker blacks for better contrast and readability on non-reflective surfaces.

If you primarily use glossy or semi-gloss labels, the Gloss version is the best choice. If you work with matte or uncoated materials and want the richest black print quality, go with the Matte version.
  • Epson ColorWorks printers use pigment-based ink, which provides water-resistant smudge-proof, and fade-resistant prints.
  • The materials we offer that are compatible with Epson ColorWorks printers are paper and film.
  • The Epson ColorWorks printers are compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, Major Middleware, SAP.
