Its smooth, glossy surface uses less silicone to achieve a premium release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The global market for glassine paper is expected to double in the next decade to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.futuremarketinsights.com\/reports\/glassine-paper-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$4.7 billion USD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To make release liner, paper must be put through machines that have methods to both coat and calender it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calendering refers to the process of paper passing through alternating stacks of rolls that apply pressure, heat, and friction to smooth and polish the material. When the material is supercalendered, it\u2019s run through an additional set of calenders to produce an even smoother and glossier surface.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s a range of different release liner materials, we\u2019re going to focus on 3 main types that utilize paper specifically: <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>CCK (Clay Coated Kraft)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; CCK has the lowest costs of these three liners. It\u2019s essentially paper with clay coating, which accounts for why it\u2019s the cheapest. This is also the least dense and most opaque of all the liners and lays flat due to low flexibility. Because of these features, users of CCK will find it applied for graphics or laser sheet labels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>SCK (Super Calendered Kraft<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; SCK is primarily used in North America versus other countries. In the U.S. we see it used for thermal printing and applications. Where CCK gets almost all of its holdout (a barrier against silicone) from the clay coating, SCK gets its holdout and low opacity due to its higher density. SCK production in the U.S. is done in a single manufacturing operation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Glassine <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Glassine is the most expensive of the 3 materials due to the extra production steps required when making it. Glassine has to be remoisturized and recalendered through 2-3 manufacturing operations. This results in a much thinner material that is extremely durable with the highest density and lowest opacity, all attributes that differentiate glassine from other release liners.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because glassine requires all of these extra steps, it takes more time, energy, and money to make. Especially when many of the other label industries use glassine as a primary material for release liner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to lower pricing for release liner in the U.S., mills are less profitable and have not invested in the process to the level found elsewhere, like European mills. The European market alone has multiple suppliers of glassine, including companies like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UPM<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahlstro-Munksj\u00f6<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sappi<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delfort<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Point blank, North America just doesn\u2019t have paper mills dedicated to manufacturing glassine in large enough quantities. For example, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahlstro-Munksj\u00f6 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is one of (if not the only) manufacturer of glassine based in North America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While they produce around 70,000 tons annually, this number includes both glassine and SCK materials. According to Datamyne, glassine use in the last few years only makes up a small percentage of this amount:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 = 75,019<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 = 84,845<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 (YTD) = 55,607<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compare these meager numbers to UPM\u2019s production of nearly 950,000 tons per year for its users.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But despite glassine being promoted as a premium product for release liners, it still hasn\u2019t gained popularity in North America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if glassine is truly a \u201cbetter\u201d material to use, why won\u2019t we use it? We\u2019re happy to use SCK with no extra performance features, which is why it\u2019s still such a prevalent material.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, if North American users have to switch away from SCK to another material, we\u2019re more likely to use PET liner before glassine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PET liner is film material that functions the same as glassine, especially in high-speed dispensing environments, like conveyor belts in a warehouse or during the SLAM process at an Amazon Fulfillment Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, glassine is the most expensive out of all the paper materials for release liner. The complaint \u201cI have to change my tools!\u201d ends up being the biggest objection for converters in North America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process to convert machinery is a huge project, taking months to complete and costing millions of dollars. In 2018 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upm.com\/siteassets\/asset\/investors\/2020\/upm-results-2020-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UPM spent 124 million euro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to rebuild and convert a paper machine to glassine production at one of their German mills. The machine wasn\u2019t up and running until Q1 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machines used to die-cut labels on glassine liners must also be altered. North America\u2019s standard for liner thickness is <strong>2.4mL<\/strong>, which coincides with SCK. Glassine liner is thinner, between <strong>1.5-2.1mL<\/strong>, depending.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does this matter?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thickness of the release liner controls how deep the die-cutting machine cuts during the label making process. A thinner liner means new die plates and anvils (key parts of the machine) would be required if a manufacturer wants to switch materials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s worth noting that die-cutting equipment in North America is already set to 2.4mL. For example, the main objection of changing over equipment has been gradually losing steam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, label manufacturers producing a large variety of different label shapes and sizes would find it more difficult to make the change to glassine. It would require them to replace all of their dies, and without having a high demand for glassine, switching over would be a waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But technology has advanced in this department over the years. As UPM is the biggest supplier of glassine in Europe, we\u2019re likely to get the bulk of it from them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our annual glassine import sits roughly around 30,000-50,000 tons. While these numbers have stayed the same over the last few years, they\u2019re scheduled to increase as the ramifications from supply chain issues continue affecting raw material availability.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, importing comes at a cost.
