When it came to the LabelWriter 5XL I was interested in seeing how DYMO was attempting to set itself apart from its competitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So what was my first impression? A few factors stood out:<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>It looks almost identical to the 4XL<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>It prints slow<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>It\u2019s loud<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>It has an RFID chip on the roll core<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n            <div class=\"smith-corona-featured-image\">\n\n                <img src=\"https:\/\/www.smithcorona.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dymo-labelwriter-5xl-review-hero-splash.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"460\" \/>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first glance, I was surprised to see how similar it was to the DYMO 4XL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I mean <\/span><b>very similar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So much that I thought there was a mistake and I was sent the wrong thermal printer. This left me genuinely confused as to what exactly was so special about this new version.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I investigated further, I began to notice little differences: additional interface buttons, different internal setup, added connectivity. These were definite upgrades from before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, the print speed. Now I understand there are reasons for this (which we\u2019ll discuss later) but when comparing it to other small desktop printers I\u2019ve reviewed, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithcorona.com\/blog\/wireless-rollo-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rollo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithcorona.com\/blog\/zebra-zd620-printer-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zebra<\/a>, the difference is noticeable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It comes in dead last for speed. Not the first choice I would make if I need a large batch of labels printed in a hurry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third, it\u2019s loud. I realize printers will make some noise as they print. That\u2019s an obvious given.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when labels print from the DYMO 5XL, they make a very distinct, uncomfortable sound, like a high-pitch, robotic whine of some sort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not pleasant. So if you\u2019re printing several labels at once or a large batch, be prepared to cover your ears.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, the RFID chip. This way, labels don\u2019t run out mid-print.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you may be thinking, \u201cWow, what awesome new technology! How convenient!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>But there\u2019s a huge catch.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DYMO\u2019s Automatic Label Recognition is possible through RFID technology.
