Smith Corona History:

1886
The first typewriter that writes upper and lower case letters is created by the Smith Premier Typewriter Company.
1903
Formation of L.C. Smith & Bros. Typewriter Company in Syracuse, New York.
1906
The Rose Typewriter Company introduces the world´s first successful portable typewriter.
1909
Rose changes its name to the Standard Typewriter Company
1910
Theodore Roosevelt takes Standard´s Model #2 of Folding Type-Bar Visible Writing Typewriter on a hunting trip to Africa.
1914 Following the success of its "Corona" typewriter, Standard renames itself after this popular model.
1926
L.C. Smith & Bros. and Corona Typewriter merge with Smith producing office typewriters and Corona manufacturing portables.
1942
At the U.S. Government´s request, Smith Corona suspends typewriter production to make rifles for the war effort.
1955
Production of the first Smith Corona electric office typewriter begins.
1957
Smith Corona introduces the world´s first portable electric typewriter.
1960
The first powered carriage return is developed by Smith Corona.
1962
Changes name to SCM Corporation. Sells its first electrostatic copiers.
1973
Invented the first removable cartridge ribbon that made it possible to change ribbon in seconds without touching an inked surface. It was an instant success.
1984
Introduces WordEraserTM Correction, the most advanced typewriter correction system to date.
1985
Introduces the first Electronic Dictionary in a portable typewriter and its first Personal Word Processor (PWP).
1989
Launched the world´s first Laptop Personal Word Processor.
1994
Produces personal digital assistant products.
1999
As the Company looks to the new millennium, the era of portable typewriter manufacturing has given way to a sales and marketing driven organization, updating its "ink on paper" heritage with the introduction of new products and services.
